4 April 2020
Typical of such a good Group 1 day we have very competitive fields but then tempered with a possible very wet track. The rail is back to the true, but how it plays and the likely influence of rain and or wear we’ll not know until the day gets started.
I have tried to hand pick some thoughts across the day. No formal bets but if you watching this is what I would have an interest bet around –
R2 #3 RELOADING ($2.00) looks the obvious coming off some super formlines behind Castelvecchio and Shadow Hero, big drop in grade and should be winning but expect it starts healthy red figures by race time.
R3 Highly competitive Country Championships with form coming from all directions, anything could happen here and wouldn’t surprise thought the main chances looked (in no order) #1 Bobbing #2 Two Big Fari #5 Sneak Preview #6 Julian Rock and #7 Ligulate but three of those have wide draws and questionable maps and so will need luck. If anything #5 Sneak Preview ($23.00) each way.
Update: Very strong Saturday am push for #1 BOBBING ($4.40), under the race conditions does look in very light at the weights for a Group 2 placed horse, handles wet fine
R4 #3 COLETTE ($2.40) looks the stand out here and is priced accordingly, comes off two impressive wins and we were with it last start when backed off the map, looks to have plenty more upside.
R5 Stayers over 2600mtrs on a wet track, they could run this five times for five different results I’m sure. #7 Angle Of Truth might get a soft time in front, #3 Galic Chieftain #5 Carif and #11 Youngstar all look ready to run well, but leave me out.
R6 #8 OLE KIRK ($8.50) had excuses and checkered run last start, since impressive trial, looks to be crying out for 1400 and bred to handle the ground, fav Mamaragan does look well placed but while running two nice starts its numbers have not been that impressive, 2yo’s looking to get to 1400 on wet ground I want to look for value.
Interest bet: #8 Ole Krk $8.50
R7 Derby no bet for me given how the map looks to work out, Castelvecchio had it drawn a gate I would have been on but from 9 does it go forward (use up some juice) or go back and be left in limbo land? Shadow Hero wants dry, Warning looks a dour stayer ready to run its best this prep, if the track ends up quite wet then I think the right bet is our winner last week Quick Thinker.
Interest Bet #6 Quick Thinker $9.00
R8 Cracking sprint race but where to look? Happy to risk Nature Strip think he gets early pressure to lead, could find reasons to look at Loving Gaby, Bivouac and Exceedance, but if I was to have an interest I’d be with Pierata ($9.00), strips fitter of first up run, can handle the wet, likely to get late shot at them – very hard race.
Top 4: #2 #7 #9 #13
R9 Doncaster obviously doesn’t get any easier here, Brandenburg a 3yo in very good form and they have such a good record in this race, Waller has won 6 of the last 12 editions of this race, I do like the look of his smart import Shared Ambition ($11.00) has won 6 of 8, wet track no issue, looks to have a touch of class about it, big chances to Mister Sea Wolf, Yulong Prince and Imaging but the race has a very long tail.
Interest bet: #17 Shared Ambition $11.00
Top 7 for those looking for small box up exacta or multi: #1 #2 #5 #10 #12 #17 #19
R10 #2 RUBISAKI ($2.20) is one of mine, love this girl, she has won 6 from 8 been beautifully placed by Patrick Payne and now comes here into set weight conditions for 3yo fillies, needs a smart ride from the inside gate but by race 10 this track is likely to be cutting up and they fanning and spreading and give her ever chance, she faced similar conditions two starts back at Warwick Farm and brained them, she certainly looks the best of the day.
All the best, enjoy the day.
