Manikato Stakes Race Day Info

Race Preview

Originally named the Freeway Stakes, first run in 1969 and won by the great Winfreux, the Moonee Valley Race Club changed the name to the Manikato Stakes in honour of the five time winner of the Group 1 William Reid Stakes and victor of this Group 1 event in both 1979 and 1982. The winners Honour Roll would send chills down any punter’s spine with Vain, Dual Choice, Redoutes Choice, Miss Andretti, Hay List, Sepoy, Buffering all amongst the winners. Amazingly, four future Cox Plate winners won this event the year prior to winning the Plate, Strawberry Road, Rubiton, Dane Ripper and Sunline. Spark of Life, Spinning Hill and Tauto join both Manikato and Dual Choice as two time winners. 2015 winner Chautauqua returns for another crack, while only 15 favourites have saluted since Vain was victorious in 1969.

Eleven runners in the 2017 version of this Group 1 event, and very few serious winning chances. Most of the horses are get back and run on types which may mean an acute lack of pace which may play to the on pacers.

Chautauqua is very fit now following three runs this time in however he takes 400m to get his legs moving at any inordinate speed and has given away far too much start to win at any of these attempts. He has won twice at this track but he won’t want to get as far back as he did in the Everest as he doesn’t have the big wide Royal Randwick stretches to assist. He can win, but will need plenty of luck.

Vega Magic’s run in The Everest was nothing short of sensational. From a wide gate he was trapped deep, got a long way out of his ground and although looking to be struggling on the turn, he powered home to run a terrific second to Redzel, and in another 50 metres may have even won. Williams can dictate this race either from the front, or outside the leader and a repeat of his Everest run from a much better draw sees him winning tonight.

In Her Time has won both her starts this time in in most impressive fashion this time in belying her unlucky efforts during the Brisbane winter. She is all class and from the good draw, she will be in the hunt for a long way. The only query is whether she may be looking for a bit further now as she is being set for the Emirates on the final day of the Flemington carnival.

With due respect, for a Group 1 race, form is pretty shallow after those three.

Malaguerra ran on okay in the Moir, however that form has not stood up and has a horror draw. Hey Doc has been freshened after two failures in top grade, he too has an awkward draw and will need luck to win. Rock Magic has been beaten in easier races and will need to lift. Speith and English need to improve on their most recent efforts. Viddora’s run in the Moir was very good however this race is up another level. Super Cash has been racing inferior animals and will need luck from the draw,

Voodoo Lad has a chance from the good draw with Bowman navigating, and he was finding the line strongly in the Moir over an unsuitable distance. From the Weir camp, he is one who can show improvement.

Reluctant to tip good things in Group 1 races, however this looks Vega Magic’s race with Williams from the ideal draw. In Her Time the only possible danger although it is doubtful she is as good as Vega Magic. If Chautauqua can settle closer, which is highly improbably around The Valley, he can win, however punters will require respirators to stick with him.

#2 Vega Magic xxxx

#9 In Her Time

#1 Chautauqua

#6 Voodoo Lad

Best of luck to all punters this weekend.
