Tip: Sydney FC
The Grand Final of all Grand Finals… 1 v 2, the Sky Blues v Victory…
What can we say about Sydney FC that hasn’t already been said? They’ve set all records this year. Most points in a Season, best Goal Difference (+43), fewest goals conceded (12), fewest goals conceded at home (4) PLUS, they have played Victory 3 times this year for 3 wins (05/11 – 2:1 SFS | 26/01 – 2:1 ETIHAD | 03/03 1:0 SFS).
Now that we’ve got the stats out of the way, lets look at this match up much more closely. We clearly have the best two teams in the competition, with more firepower than a driving range. We have the League’s all time leading goal scorer in Besart Berisha (101 goals) up against the best player in the land, the Serbian superstar in Milos Ninkovic. Both born winners and will do what it takes to get their team over the line on Sunday evening. Interestingly, Victory & Sydney are also #1 & #2 when it comes to scoring goals in the last 15mins of contests (13 & 12 goals respectively), and its due to the fact that they are also the fittest two teams in the competition. They kick into another gear when other teams are fatiguing.
Sydney press quite high up on the field and look for the turnover in the opposition’s half so they can catch them on the break in a matter of seconds. Their diamond front 3rd of Bobo/Ninkovic/Brosque are the best in the business, and they can hurt you in an instant. Marginally behind them and I say marginally, Victory counter with their diamond of Berisha/Khalfallah/Rojas. And you see why fireworks are expected??
For mine, the contest will be won in defence. Sydney have kept a record 17 clean sheets throughout the season, and to think they’ve only conceded 12 goals in 42hrs of football. Yes that’s right, 12 goals in 28 games. Unbelievable at this level. And this is why we saw Sydney’s back 4 of Vukovic/Wilkinson/Grant/Zullo all be rewarded for their stellar seasons with all 4 making the PFA Team of the Year that was announced earlier this week.
In a nutshell, Grand Finals are built on Defence, and for this reason I believe Sydney will win their 3rd A-League grand final this weekend. It’s a funny thing when we play Grand Finals, it’s usually the team that is up for it on the day that takes home the silverware, and not necessarily the best team, but Graham Arnold has geared his entire season towards getting the Sky Blues back into the Asian Champions League and taking Sydney FC back to the promised land one again.
Come 7pm on Sunday Night, in front of their home ground, in front of their fans, at a venue they’ve only conceded 4-goals throughout their campaign, I believe we will see Sydney FC crowned the Kings of Australian Football one more time.
Bets to consider
Sydney to score the 1st goal – Victory have been poor on the road in recent weeks, scoring the opening goal of only 2 of their last 7 and in the other 5 have been kept scoreless
Total Match Goal’s of less than 2.5 – Melbourne gone under in 5 of last 7, Sydney the same in 8 of last 11 at home
Sydney the only team to score ($3.20) – given Melbourne’s lack of goals in recent weeks and Sydney’s brick wall defence
Pick the score – Sydney FC 2-0 currently paying $9.00
